The union government has decided to ban several platforms and websites for showcasing obscene, vulgar, and ‘p*rnograph*c’ content. According to the Hindustan Times, the centre has restricted 25 apps and websites, which include ALTBalaji, ULLU, Desiflix, Boomex, Big Shots App, Navarasa Lite, and Gulab App.
The government bans OTT apps and websites over ‘obscene’ content for providing
As per the report, the Indian government has ordered blocking all the websites and OTT platforms mentioned in the list for “obscene,” “vulgar,” and “p*rn*graphic content.”After authorities found that these apps and websites were violating the policies and laws, the centre took such a step.The report further stated that as per the officials, several platforms had content with “s*xual innuendos,” while some featured long scenes of “s*xually explicit acts” with nudity. This content was described as “pornographic in nature.”Reportedly, the content hosted by these apps had no story but was just full of “obscene and vulgar” imagery. The portrayal of nudity and sexual content in unsuitable circumstances was also noticed by authorities, and they flagged it, especially “family relationships and other sensitive settings.”
The government is yet to announce the ban publicly
In April this year, the Apex Court issued notices to the Centre and other popular digital platforms as a response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) asking for action against explicit content on OTT platforms along with social media as well.Reportedly, platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ULLU, ALTT, X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and others, along with the Centre, were served notices.However, the bench of justices pointed out that the petition has made a strong point; however, it stated that the matter doesn’t come under their “domain.”
Political parties and NCW condemn ULLU and other apps
Earlier, several political party leaders and the National Commission for Women condemned the web series titled ‘House Arrest,’ which was streamed on the ULLU app. Ajaz Khan of ‘Bigg Boss‘ fame hosted the show. It received massive backlash for its vulgar and disrespectful content towards women.
