MP Jamil Jivani Launches Petition to End Temporary Foreign Worker Program

Conservative MP Jamil Jivani is calling for an end to Canada’s temporary foreign worker (TFW) program, claiming it fuels unsustainable immigration, depresses wages, and worsens youth unemployment.

In a video shared online, Jivani links rising immigration to strained hospitals, doctor shortages, housing costs, and a tight job market. “You go to find a job, there might not be one,” he said, citing a 14% youth unemployment rate.

The Ontario MP’s petition excludes seasonal agricultural workers but argues the overall TFW program is harming Canadian workers. “You can’t have a sensible conversation about this in Parliament anymore,” he added.

Employment Minister Patty Hajdu dismissed the move, noting recent government steps to scale back the program and pointing out Jivani’s lack of an official critic role in his party. The federal plan still includes admitting 82,000 temporary workers annually from 2025 to 2027.

Jivani’s proposal has yet to gain official Conservative Party backing.
