Veteran actor Anupam Kher, preparing to direct ‘Tanvi The Great’, recently reflected on the challenges he faced early in his acting career. He recalled how his bald appearance led to repeated rejections and harsh remarks, making his initial journey in the film industry discouraging. Despite these setbacks, Kher persevered and built a successful career.Battling Baldness in the Early 80sSpeaking to the Free Press Journal, Kher recalled that when he entered the film industry in 1981, he was already bald. He explained that his current shaved look is dignified and stylish, but back in the early ’80s, he was losing hair all over, which made things difficult. People advised him to become an assistant or a writer instead of pursuing acting. Even after revealing that he was a gold medalist from the National School of Drama, many doubted his chances because of his baldness. Determined to prove them wrong, Kher mentioned that his first secretary, Ashok Punjabi, often suggested he wear a wig, questioning if he had ever seen a hero without hair. Kher, however, was confident that he would be the exception.The Power of Work Over AppearanceThe actor refused to let negative comments dampen his spirit. Instead, he relied on his talent and confidence to prove his worth. He believes that true value comes from one’s work, not appearance. As he bluntly puts it, “I think people like to pass judgments but then the courage and beauty of it is that you tell them ‘F off’.” He insists that success is sustained by dedication and attitude, not by others’ opinions. According to him, critics often speak out of their own insecurities, but ultimately, “your work should speak. That’s the only thing that matters.”Longevity in Entertainment: Beyond LooksKher emphasized that physical appearance has little impact on long-term success in the entertainment industry. He mentioned Shah Rukh Khan as an example, noting that despite not being tall or muscular, Khan has remained a dominant figure in Bollywood for over 40 years. Anupam explained that success depends largely on how one markets oneself. He also referenced Mahatma Gandhi, who created the trend of the Gandhi topi but never wore one himself, standing out as a bald man with a stick. Kher acknowledged that while the industry can be harsh and filled with bullies, it is important to stay true to oneself and persevere despite difficulties.
