On Sridevi’s 62nd birthday, we revisit the making of ChaalBaaz, the film that cemented her status as one of Bollywood’s greatest performers. Filmmaker Pankaj Parashar shares behind-the-scenes anecdotes, from her creative brilliance and dedication to the unforgettable bond—and occasional friction—she shared with choreographer Saroj Khan.
Sridevi ’s creative flair
Sridevi had a strong creative flair, especially in song sequences. She shared a close bond with choreographer Saroj Khan, often working independently of the director. During the shoot of Bhoot Raja with Rajinikanth, both preferred the usual setup of choreographer and actress filming the song while the director stayed aside—but Pankaj Parashar wanted to be more involved.
Director steps in to collaborate
So Pankaj Parashar decided to take charge. He told Sridevi he wanted to shoot the song his way, and she agreed. Later, while planning the rain song, she called him and Saroj Khan to discuss ideas. Parashar storyboarded the entire sequence in a day, and Sridevi even sketched her costume, including the plastic raincoat and cap. When they shared their plans, Sridevi applauded, asking Saroj to explain her choreography—both had clearly done their homework. She gave her best even when sick. Despite having a 101-degree fever, she kept dancing and, after every take, would eagerly ask, “Wasn’t I good?”
Reuniting friends after a fallout
However, the bond between Sridevi and Saroj Khan wasn’t always smooth. They had a fallout, and Parashar stepped in as an unexpected mediator. Saroj gave him a letter to Sridevi asking them to move past their differences. When Parashar read it to Sridevi, she teared up but agreed to meet Saroj, and he successfully reunited the two friends.
